Monthly New Job Postings Pull Back

Published: April 5, 2026

The preliminary data for March 2026 indicate a pullback in new job postings across most regions. Table 1 shows a global decline of 17.7% month-over-month. Europe recorded the largest regional drop at 23.8%, North America fell 12.9%, and the Rest of the World decreased by 10.7%.

These monthly moves follow a stronger February performance shown in the final report (see Table 2), when global postings rose 20.8%. February gains were broad-based: Europe increased 28.7%, North America rose 11.4%, and the Rest of the World gained 29.4%.

On a trailing 12‑month basis (Table 3), the market is essentially flat to slightly negative. The preliminary March figures show a global change of -0.4%, Europe -0.4%, North America 0.0%, and the Rest of the World -2.2%. Those 12‑month values smooth the larger month-to-month swings and provide a steadier view of the underlying direction.

Table 4 (13‑month monthly series) provides additional context. The series documents material volatility over the past year: sharp recoveries in early 2026 (global +20.8% in February) were followed by an immediate reversal in March. Europe’s pattern shows particularly large swings (for example, +28.7% in February then -23.8% in March). North America has moved in a narrower band but still shows meaningful short-term variation (notable gains in late 2025 and early 2026 followed by the March decline). The Rest of the World exhibits the widest amplitude, with large positive and negative monthly moves over the period.

Implications and guidance for hiring teams and leaders

  • Treat monthly changes as high-frequency signals. Table 1 captures immediate activity that can reflect short-term factors (seasonality, project timing, budget timing, or campaign effects). Use it to inform near-term operational decisions (e.g., whether to pause active sourcing or accelerate interviews), but avoid overreacting.
  • Use the trailing 12‑month measures in Table 3 for strategic planning. Those values smooth volatility and better reflect sustained demand for talent across the ecosystem.
  • Combine signals. If monthly declines (Table 1) are accompanied by declining 12‑month trends (Table 3), that suggests broader softening and may warrant budget or headcount adjustments. When monthly movement reverses but 12‑month trends remain flat or positive, consider selective, targeted hiring rather than broad freezes.
  • Monitor regional variation. Europe’s large month-to-month swings warrant closer attention to localized drivers (funding rounds, policy, or major employer actions). North America’s relatively narrower swings suggest steadier demand, while the Rest of the World remains more episodic.

Bottom line

March’s preliminary drop follows a strong February and demonstrates the short‑term volatility captured in the monthly series (Table 4). The trailing 12‑month indicators (Table 3) remain close to flat, signaling that the sector’s underlying demand has not shifted dramatically over the past year. HR leaders and hiring managers should balance responsiveness to monthly signals with the stability provided by the 12‑month trends when making hiring and resourcing decisions.
