QED-C is accepting nominations for the QED-C Steering Committee until Friday, November 17, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. PST. Please submit nominations to QED-C deputy director Jonathan Felbinger, cc: admin@quantumconsortium.org. Self-nominations are welcome. QED-C especially encourages candidates from under-represented groups.
The QED-C Steering Committee sets the direction for the consortium as it strengthens the groundwork for a robust commercial industry based on quantum information science and technologies, as well as the supply chain to support it. The Steering Committee determines QED-C positions, including policy recommendations in an increasing regulatory environment. QED-C seeks candidates for two seats, each to serve a three-year term:
- large company representative (more than 5,000 employees)
- mid-sized or small company representative (5,000 employees or fewer)
Eligibility: Candidates must be an employee of a Tier 1 Corporate Participant and be designated by their employer to serve on the Steering Committee. Steering Committee members must be U.S. citizens. Steering Committee role, eligibility, and responsibilities are detailed in articles 2.2.2 and 7 of the Participation Agreement and section 8 of the Handbook of Policies and Procedures.
The election will be held during the QED-C Plenary on December 14, 2023. Candidates will have the opportunity to speak for 3–5 minutes (in-person, via Zoom, or a pre-recorded video) during the December 14th plenary meeting and answer questions from the electorate prior to the voting process. Each Tier 1 company has one vote. We will send detailed information on how to vote to your company’s Primary Point of Contact.
Candidates should furnish a biography or résumé, candidate statement, and headshot (not more than 2 pages total in Word file format), which QED-C will distribute to eligible voters. Statements should explain the candidate’s qualifications for and interest in serving on the Steering Committee and should address the following questions:
- What is your/your company’s interest in QIST and in quantum-enabling technologies?
- What qualifications, special capabilities, unique skills, or experience would you bring to the Steering Committee?
- What is your vision for QED-C and for the quantum industry in general: next year, within five years, and in ten years?
- Why would you make a good member of the Steering Committee?
Note that candidates are elected to provide guidance to QED-C and its executive management team as representative members of the quantum community (not just their company) and for the benefit of the entire industry. We estimate the time commitment for Steering Committee Members as 60–100 hours per year, plus participation in normal QED-C activities. The Steering Committee convenes at the time of plenary meetings and as required between plenaries, rarely more than once a month. Steering Committee meetings associated with plenary meetings are in person. Limited funding is available to offset the cost of Steering Committee member travel to QED-C activities.
QED-C is entering an exciting new phase. We are building a trusted network of members (welcoming applicants from 39 countries and growing), leading assessments of several more use cases, and launching our third set of R&D projects. The National Quantum Initiative Act, which called for QED-C, is up for renewal and QED-C is providing input to Hill staff. Work by the TACs to identify gaps and needs will lead to funded projects and activities, such as enabling technology R&D projects, workforce development efforts, standards and benchmark activities, and market and use case assessments. The Steering Committee will help guide QED-C into the future toward its mission to enable and grow a robust quantum industry.
Thank you for your contributions to QED-C to date and we hope your company will consider this opportunity to help guide the consortium forward.
